SYNOPSIS

The war drama film 1971 released in 2007. The Hindi-language conflict narrative was directed by Amrit Sagar and co-written by Piyush Mishra and Amrit Sagar. Based on true events following the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, the film portrays the plight of Indian prisoners of war. The ensemble cast includes Manoj Bajpayee, Ravi Kishan, Piyush Mishra, Deepak Dobriyal, among others. 1971 received critical acclaim, winning the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi at the 55th National Film Awards. It recounts the escape of six Indian Army soldiers captured by the Pakistan Army during the discord, which followed East Pakistan's rebellion to form a new country separate from West Pakistan.

TRIVIA

Moti Sagar penned a short story in 1972 titled "6 Qaidi," later discussing it with his son Amrit during his tenure as Assistant Director from 1994 to 1995. Amrit, while in the US, envisioned adapting it into a film, initially conceiving only its climax: a lone figure navigating snow amidst gunfire.

Amrit Sagar sought to cast Hrithik Roshan as the lead, but Hrithik was tied up with Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon. Despite being committed to Lakshya, Hrithik was captivated by the film's narration and conveyed his admiration to Moti Sagar, instilling confidence in the project.

The truck carrying five main protagonists narrowly avoided being thrown off a cliff that plunged 4 km into darkness along a remote highway in Manali. The dramatic incident was captured on camera as it unfolded.

During the climax sequence shoot, at an altitude of 14,000 feet amidst 6ft of snow and ice, Manoj Bajpai came perilously close to experiencing frostbite.

The movie did not premiere theatrically in British Columbia, Canada.

The film premiered on the same day as Sarhad Paar with both movies addressing the theme of prisoners of war.

Manoj Bajpayee found himself without work and waiting at home until the opportunity to star in 1971 arose.
